The Great Betrayal is an event of great significance which took place around the transition from the Second Age to the Third Age. Accounts of the event vary widely, and some scholars insist that these accounts do not describe the same event at all, but rather two (or more) betrayals of a high-level adventuring party which happened to coincide.

Accounts of the Great Betrayal[]

  • The Trickster and Faust -- Malvont origin. Story told at the University, widely considered to be distorted by urban legend.
  • Hymn of Cross, Steadfast Against Betrayal -- Nyasan origin. Part of a much longer story-hymn praising the deeds of Pope Cross. (The full hymn would take days to sing; typically relevant selections are performed at papal events).
  • Inscription on the Monument to the Loyal -- Ravinian origin. Inscription on one of the many historical monuments in the capitol city; notably older than most other accounts.
  • Chronicles of the Age Transition, Volume Three, Book Two -- Nyasan/Benin Skyfall origin. Part of a dense academic work on the religious and historical aspects of the transition between the Second and Third Age; not secret, but rarely read.
  • A Dastardly Betrayal! -- Baldur origin. Part of a long sequence of adventure romances generally considered to be a roman a clef referring to the life of Cicero Shadolan. This part of the greater story is generally considered to be fictional.
  • What the lemurs have to say -- Druid story. Usually assumed to be an allegory.
  • Mab's First Consort -- Dark Fae story. Lurid.
